As Movement Strategy Center’s Senior Director of People Operations, Masako is responsible for leading and evolving MSC’s People Operations in alignment with organizational strategy, culture, and environment — including the development of employee policy and strategy design to serve the team at MSC.
Masako’s professional focus is to work with organizations whose mission is dedicated to supporting creativity, strengthening education, and promoting social justice and cross-cultural collaboration and understanding. She has over two decades of experience in nonprofit management beginning with a small Japanese American civil rights organization in Oakland.
Immediately prior to joining MSC, Masako served as Director of Finance and Operations at the Museum of Children’s Art (MOCHA) in Oakland, where she managed a $2 million budget and overall financial accounting processes, government and private foundation grants application and reporting, oversaw daily operations of the facility including management of the lease, insurance, and technology, and supervised administrative staff, program managers, and teaching artists. During her eight years at MOCHA, she also served twice as Interim Executive Director, supporting executive leadership transitions, board relations and strategic planning. Masako’s previous employers include Japan-U.S. Community Education & Exchange, where she managed cross-cultural nonprofit leadership training program, and Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin. She has also done consulting work for the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership in New York, to support in the management of their cross-cultural nonprofit leadership program.
Masako spent her childhood growing up in Japan, and moved to California without her family when she was 15 years old. Growing up in a working class family, she is the first person in her family to earn a college degree. She has called Oakland her second home for the past 28 years. She holds a dual BA in International Relations and French Studies from Mills College, also studied filmmaking and 3D modeling/animation at San Francisco State University. Outside of MSC, Masako is a practicing mom of active 2-year old twins, and also enjoys traveling, learning languages, cooking and playing the piano and ukulele!
